Annotation:

The name Litvak means “Lithuanian Jew.” There are two versions of its origin; the first one is related to the place name (Lithuanian-born), and the second one, to affiliation to a certain brand of Judaism reflecting the dispute between the Litvaks (Misnagdim) and Hasids in the late 18th and early 19th century (we used materials from the website https://toldot.ru/life/lnames/a/).

(?) ליטבק, 22. אזור פריוויסליאן (פולין הקונגרסאית). יהודים אירופאים. תצלום מהאוסף של ארקדי דנילוביץ' אלקינד (1869-1920), שבשנות 1894-1896 ערך מחקרים אנתרופולוגיים מבין יהודי האזור פריוויסליאן. צלם ד'.ד'. אלקינד. 1897. פירושו של השם ליטבק הוא "יהודי ליטאי". קיימות שתי גרסאות למוצאו: הראשונה קשורה לשם המקום (יוצאי ליטא), והשנייה קשורה לשייכות לכיוו היהדות זה או אחר, המשקף את מחלוקת בסוף המאה ה-17 - תחילת המאה ה-19 בין הליטאים (מיתנגדים) לחסידים.
