“Today’s Polish Jew, in his clothing and appearance, facial expressions, and gestures makes a special and not-soon-forgotten impression on an observer; a long coat almost down to heels and a peculiar peaked cap are a necessary feature of the costume of both the young and the old…”(from the book The Jews by A. א'. בירקאן, בן 26. אזור פריוויסליאן (פולין הקונגרסאית). יהודים אירופאים. תצלום מהאוסף של ארקדי דנילוביץ' אלקינד (1869-1920), שבשנות 1894-1896 ערך מחקרים אנתרופולוגיים מבין יהודי האזור פריוויסליאן. צלם ד'.ד'. אלקינד. 1897. "היהודי הפולני העכשיוי, הן מבחינת בגדיו, והן מבחינת מראהו, והבעות פניו ושפת גופו - עושה על הצופה רושם מיוחד, אשר לא ניתן לשכוח מהר: מעיל ארוך, כמעט עד הבוהן, וכובע מסוג מסויים - מהווים את החלק הנדרש גם בלבוש של המבוגרים וגם כן בלבוש של הצעירים...".
