mid-19th century
The components of women's attire were often sewn from various types of silk fabric, varying in color, pattern, and density, but this in no way diminished the prestige of silk clothing in the eyes of the people. Fabrics with floral patterns were the most popular. Bouquets of flowers entwined with ribbons, climbing stems with rosettes, garlands and wreaths with buds, both closed and open, adorned fabrics in various shades of red, yellow, green, blue, black, and other colors. Striped and checkered patterns, as well as geometric motifs, were less common. People also noted the splendor of women's attire, demonstrating the financial means of a family capable of purchasing a significant amount of fabric to sew a garment such as a sarafan. Silk clothing was treated with care, washing it as little as possible, as traditional washing contributed to the deterioration of the material's quality.
