Mari: North-East Mari
late 19th - early 20th century
Mari women's and girls' clothing consisted of a shirt, caftan, apron, belt, trousers, foot wraps, shoes, a headdress, and jewelry. Headdress indicated the wearer's age and social status. Meadow Mari girls wore headscarves: everyday ones made of homespun linen, while on holidays they wore factory-made ones. The Eastern and Meadow Mari women's headdress, the "shimaksh," consisted of a rectangular piece of linen, the top end of which was sewn into a pointed end. It was secured to the head with a birch bark or felt cap. Each headdress corresponded to specific hairstyles. Mari girls wore a single braid; women wore their hair tightly twisted into a bun, pinned at the top of the head, and topped with a pointed cap. Hairstyles and headdresses were changed during wedding ceremonies.
