Zhang is a punishing instrument: a long wooden stick slightly bent and flat in its upper part. Applied to its flat upper part is an inscription in Chinese hieroglyphs, in black ink. The handle is long, of an oval section. The whole instrument is carved out of one piece of wood. Similar punishing instrument appeared in the beginning of the Eastern Han dynasty (25–220 CE). With the advent of the Sui dynasty, the whip punishment was replaced by lashes with heavy (thick) zhang sticks made of the wood of chu tree (hemp-leaved willow shrub). In the Explanation of the Tang Code it is said that the purpose of this punishment is restriction.
