The belt was a most important component of the traditional men’s costume, and formed part of everyday, hunting, and festive (wedding or funeral) clothing. Leather belts of the Nenets, Khanty, and Mansi were decorated with metal buttons and with openwork metal or ivory plates. Suspended from the belt on chains were a knife in a sheath, a small bag with a whetstone, and a bear tusk which served as an amulet. Attached to this belt as amulets are also elk teeth.
