The sled gradually superseded the kerezha (see No. 445-22) as the essential means of transport used by the Saami. It was borrowed from the Nenets deer herdsmen who resettled, with the Izhma Komi, from Pechora District, Arkhangelsk Province, in the 2nd half of the 19th century. The sled was also controlled with a khorey, but two to seven deer could be harnessed in a sled. They differed by purpose: there were riding, load-carrying, or woman’s sleds. Abstract by A.A.
