The base and the paddle are of a same length, and joined with a hinge in the lower part. The distaff paddle is decorated on the outside with a carved geometric ornament. The distaff’s compact design is convenient for migrations. The Saami women could use a distaff constructed from materials at hand right on a new camping ground, or could do without it at all, and spin using only a spindle. Abstract by A.A. Zankovskaya
