Annotation:

The surname Turshu is translated from the Crimean Tatar language as “pickle,” which indicates its origin from the occupation of pickled food making and sale. Predominating in Karaite surnames are the so-called “trade” surnames, i.e. originating from guild manufacturing and merchant specialties. In 1865, the Simferopol Girls’ School was opened in at No. 4 of the current Ushinsky Street in Simferopol with the funds donated by the city's residents. It was a “first class women’s college,” which in 1871 was transformed in a state-run high school for women. Emma Luchterhandt`s studio was located opposite the girls’ high school.

טורשו אסתר בת דויד, בת 10. מחוז טאוריה, סימפרופול. קראים צלם א'. לוכטרהנדט. שנת 1880. דיוקן-ויזיט ילדותי. שם המשפחה "טורשו" מתורגם מן השפה של טטרים הקרימיים כ"חמוצים", אשר מצביע על מקורו מן העיסוק - ייצור ומכירת חמוצים. רובם של שמות המשפחה של הקראים הם "מקצועיים", כלומר, מצביעים על התמחות במלאכה ומסוחר. חנות הצלום של אמה לוכטרהנדט נמצאה מול הגימנסיה לנשים בעיר סימפרופול. בשנת 1865, בסימפרופול, על תרומות מתושבי העיר נפתחה מכללת סימפרופול לנשים של דרגה 1, שהתמקמה בבנין מס' 4 ברחוב שהיום נקרא רח' אושינסקי. בשנת 1871, המכללה הומרה לגימנזיה לנשים.
