Annotation:

Jewish ethnographic expedition of S. A. An-sky. On the left is the rabbi’s house. The main place where the shtetl’s life went on was the market square. Along its perimeter it was densely lined with Jewish houses with stores, workshops, and such places as a wayside inn or tavern. The square was often located on the main road extending through the shtetl.
