Jewish ethnographic expedition of S. A. An-sky. The old man is sitting on the cover of a wooden coffin. Installed at the head of the grave is “matseva” (tombstone) with the Hebrew inscription “Passed away on the 6th (day) of the Hanukkah of the year 671 (corresponding to 1911). Righteous man, our teacher Mordecai son of Bezalel. May his soul rest among the righteous.” In the center of tombstone’s top part, two large letters are carved, an abbreviation of the expression “here lies.”
