Annotation:

Jewish ethnographic expedition of S. A. An-sky. Rabbi is the title conferred after completion of Jewish religious higher education in a yeshiva, and entitling to head a community and be a member of a rabbinical court of law. The rabbi is standing on the bimah (elevation for reading the Torah). Behind his back, on the left, is the “aron kodesh” (housing for the Torah scrolls) covered with the parochet. The rabbi is wearing a light festive attire, with a talith (praying shawl) on his shoulders).

רב בבית הכנסת. הקצה הדרום-מערבי. יהודים אירופאים. המשלחת האתנוגרפית היהודית של ס'.א'. אנ-סקי צלם - יודובין ס'.ב'. 1912-1914. נגטיב. רב - זהו תואר אשר ניתן לאחר קבלת השכלה גבוהה דתית יהודית ב"ישיבה", ומעניק את הזכות לעמוד בראש הקהילה ולהיות חבר בית הדין הרבני. הרב עומד על ה"בימה" (מדרגה לקריאת התורה). מאחורי גבו משמאל - "ארון קודש" (הכספת למגילות התורה), המכוסה עם הפרוכטה. הרב לבוש בבגדי חג בהירים, וכתפיו מכוסות עם הטלית (כיסוי תפילה).
