Annotation:

Jewish ethnographic expedition of S. A. An-sky. The caption on the gable below the oval window reads, “665 (corresponds to the year 1905). Hoe magnificent this place is. It is no other than the House of God, the gate of heaven.” The height of a synagogue was often limited by the authorities of the city or shtetl. To increase the inner space of the praying room, the synagogue’s floor was lowered.

בית הכנסת מאבן. מחוז ווהלין, עיר זאסלאב. יהודים אירופאים. המשלחת האתנוגרפית היהודית של ס'.א'. אנ-סקי. צלם - יודובין ס'.ב'. 1912 נגטיב. כיתוב בעברית על טירת בית הכנסת, מתחת לחלון הסגלגל: " תסדר (1905). מה נורא המקום הזה. אין זה כי אם בית א'' וזה שער השמים".
