Annotation:

Jewish ethnographic expedition of S. A. An-sky. A. Rechtman, a member of the expedition (far right under the shed) talking to a shtetl resident. A feature of Jewish houses was gallery. The houses had no fencing, and the gallery arranged in the house’s second storey or simply at the ground level served as a symbolic separation of the inner private space from the outer public space.
