On the reverse of the letterhead card is the inscription: “To my former pupil Rosa Markovna Malkina from sincerely well-wishing D. Pigulevsky. Sept. 2, 1907.” Next follows a later post script “(mathematician at the High School…) and acquaintance by the estate in Borkovichi with the Bimbad family. (my friend Anyuta)». In the early 20th century, Vitebsk had two girls’ high schools, Maria and Alexei. Arithmetic and geometry were among the required subjects. The Alexei High School was attended by many girls from Jewish families, which influenced the permission obtained in 1905 to teach “the requirements of the Jewish faith” to schoolgirls (we used materials from the website http://chagal-vitebsk.com/node/85).
