Annotation:

In 1897, there were 11,838 Jewish residents in Rostov-on-Don (about 10 percent of the population), and in 1914, 16,000 (7.2%). Among the Jewish population were industrialists, merchants, professional workers (for instance, 80% of doctors in Rostov-on-Don were Jews), but most of the Jews were small tradesmen and artisans. Vikenty Vyacheslavovich Roller owned a studio in Kostonaev’s house in Nikolaevsky Lane.
