Annotation:

The walls and ceiling of most wooden synagogues were decorated with mural paintings. Often they formed a continuous carpet-like ornament consisting of prayer texts, Biblical subjects, images of animals and zodiacal signs, and Oriental motifs. The walls of stone synagogues were also painted, but murals decorated just particular components of the architectural structure.

ציור קירות בית הכנסת. מחוז ווהלין, אוייזד אוברוצ'קי, עיירה יהודית נורינסק. יהודים אירופאים. צלם וולקוב פ'.ק'. צילום משלחתי. 1907 תמונה מודפסת. הקירות והתקרה של רוב בתי הכנסת מעץ קושטו בציורים. בעיקר הם התאחדו לסוג דפוס שטיח אחיד המורכב מטקסטים של תפילות, סיפורי התורה, תמונות בעלי חיים וסימני גלגל המזלות, נושאי מזרח. קירות בתי הכנסת מאבן גם צוירו, אך קושטו בציורי הקיר אק את חחלקים הבודדים של המבנה האדריכלי.
