Annotation:

The exterior of synagogues was strictly regulated by local authorities enforcing multiple restrictions on facade decoration and the building's height and location. Inside the synagogue, the Jews did not have to restrict themselves, and this freedom showed itself in wall and ceiling murals, decoration of the Aron Kodesh (housing to keep the Torah Scroll) and the bimah (pulpit for reading the Torah Scroll).

ציור קירות בית הכנסת. מחוז ווהלין, אוייזד אוברוצ'קי, עיירה יהודית נורינסק. יהודים אירופאים. צלם וולקוב פ'.ק'. צילום משלחתי. 1907 תמונה מודפסת. מראה חיצוני של בתי הכנסת הוסדר בקפדנות על ידי הרשויות המקומיות שקבעו הגבלות רבות על עיצוב החזיתות, גובה ומיקומו של המבנה. בתוך בית הכנסת יכלו היהודים לא להגביל את עצמם, וחירות זו התממשה בציורי הקיר ותקרה, בקישוט ארון הקודש (ארון לאחסון מגילת התורה) והבימה (מדרגה המגודרת לקריאת מגילת התורה).
