A traditional rowing or sailing boat of the Russian North. During the construction of karbasses, boards were joined together with juniper roots (by the Pomors) or with deer tendons (by the Saami). In warm seasons, the Saami settled on the shores of rivers and lakes, catching fish. The Saami were also sea fishermen, catching cod on the Murman coast and salmon in the mouth of rivers flowing into the Barents Sea. Abstract by A.A. Zankovskaya
