Annotation
Jewish ethnographic expedition of S. A. An-sky. The eastern wall of a synagogue, traditionally facing Jerusalem, was always left free of attachments. At this wall in the praying room, a special cabinet (Aron kodesh) was set up to keep the Torah Scroll in.

בית הכנסת מעץ. מחוז פודולסק, אוייזד פרוסקורובסקי, עיירה יהודית ירמולינצי. יהודים אירופאים. המשלחת האתנוגרפית היהודית של ס'.א'. אנ-סקי צלם - יודובין ס'.ב'. 1912-1914. תמונה מודפסת. הכותל הממרחי של בית הכנסת, אשר על פי מסורת תמיד הפונה לכיוון ירושלים, נותר ללא תוספות בניה. באולם התפילה ליד כותל זה הוקם "ארון קודש" (הארון שבו נשמרה מגילת התורה).
