The traditional winter footwear of Khanty women was made from long strips of deer leg skin, with a sole made of deer feathers, i.e. fur between the toe and heel, which had coarse pile preventing sliding. Since the 1960s, shorter fur “ankle boots,” or burki, has come into fashion, which are also made from deer leg skin and decorated with fur patchwork. Abstract by I.A. Karapetova
