All parts of a sled: skids, stanchions, rails, and seat, were cut out of wood using simple tools: knife, axe, and drill. All parts of the sled are joined rigidly: they are connected with wooden tenons. The picture shows a deer herdsman wearing a malica with an overall cloak and fur boots, hewing a skid for his new sled with an axe. In the background is a domestic deer with a bell attached to the collar.
