Setting up a chum was women’s duty. There was a certain procedure to be followed when setting up a dwelling place. First, the place for the hearth (later, for a mobile cast-iron stove) was marked out on a cleared site, to the left and right of which, floor planks were laid, and next, the beds. On the side opposite to the entrance, a table with food was placed. Next, poles were installed in a certain order, and inner covers of cloth and outer covers of fur were pitched. Abstract by I.A.
