The photo shows a man mounted on a horse, with saddlebags slung across the saddle. The horse was of great importance in the Yakuts’ nomadic life. Horses were used to ride on, or to carry loads in packs. The Yakut horses were kept at grass all year round, and were excellently adapted to the harsh Arctic conditions; they were long-haired, stocky, very sturdy, and handling strong frosts well.
