It was part of the small puppet theater orchestra, which, in addition to the karnay, included a tambourine (REM 1272-20), a double drum called a nagara (REM 1272-21), and a reed wind instrument called a surnay (1272-22). The musicians used the loud sounds of the karnay to announce the start of a puppet show. This karnay was on display at the jubilee exhibition for the 220th anniversary of the Academy of Sciences at the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera), which opened in June 1945.
