These figures of guardian spirits of fishing and hunting (yukh-ilyan’) are made of larch, which the Khants believed was a sacred wood. During sacrifices the mouths of such images would be wiped with the blood of the sacrificial animal. Such images (iu-elan’) played an important part in traditional pursuits such as hunting and fishing. They would usually be placed at the tribal prayer site. Pieces of cloth, coins, etc., were sacrificed to the most highly revered idols. Abstract by K.Yu.S.
