Men’s summer headgear: a low, tapered birch bark hat with a broad base, without any decoration; inside is a round birch bark rim to suit the head size, and a ribbon. A thin toned birch bark strip is attached along the outer edge with wooden braid. The Udege people wore the taluga aoo birch bark hat for protection against sunbeams or rain. Men’s and women’s hats were similar, and sometimes decorated with a carved birch bark applique on the outside.
