river Iman, Ussuri Krai
late 19th - early 20th century
Carved from wood. One end is oval, with a hole for the blade shank. The other end is cut off from the handle’s center. Knife handles were made of maple roots due to their high strength. Finishing the work, the handles were polished so that they get a dark brown hue and attractive texture.
