In winter, in bright sunlight, hunters and fishermen wore "glasses" to protect their eyes from the blinding glare of the snow and reflections from the ice. They were made from wood, horn, birch bark, and bone. With prolonged exposure to the sun or snow, the risk of getting a sunburn on your eyes was quite high. The Nivkh also used a special visor made of fabric.
