Annotation:

Sabbath (Shabbat, Shabad) is the Jewish Saturday, the seventh day of the creation. In Judaism, Shabbat is a holy day, on which the Torah prescribes to avoid any work. The picture shows Ashkenazi Jews who lived in Bukhara along with the Bukhara Jews.

Ethnical annotation:

בית כנסת יהודי. "שבש" (כנס שבתי). אמירות בוכרה, עיר בוכרה. יהודים בוכרים. צלם פ'. אורדה. שנות ה-1890. "שבש" (שבת) – שבת יהודית, היום השביעי של הבריאה. ביהדות, שבת היא היום הקדוש שבו התורה מצווה להימנע מעבודה. בתמונה מופיעים יהודים אשכנזים שגרו בבוכרה יחד עם יהודים בוכריים.
