Annotation:

In all, there were 12 synagogues in Kuba. The Mountain Jewish woman virtually did not take part in religious life; they did not go the synagogue. The Jews were the first to codify rules of hygiene and cleanliness in their laws. The rite of purificatory ablutions was established by the Jewish religion on behalf of God Who commanded that Moses make a copper wash basin so that Aaron and his sons could wash their hands and feet from it (entrance in the temple was one of the main occasions for ablution). In the background on the left, a mosque dome can be seen.

"המאם" - בית המרחץ ישן ומתפורר. מחוז באקו, אוייזד קובנינסקי, עיר קובה. יהודי ההרים. צלם א'.א'. אוטסופ מילר. 1907. סך הכל היו בעיר קובה 12 בתי הכנסת. נשות קהילת יהודי ההרים כמעט ולא השתתפו בחיי הדת: הן לא ביקרו בבית הכנסת. היהודים היו הראשונים שקבעו בחוקיהם את כללי ההיגיינה וניקיון. הלכות מקוואות נקבעו בדת היהודית בשם אלוהיים אשר ציווה על משה רבינו להכין כיור נחושת לרחצה, כך שאהרן ובניו יוכלו לרחוץ ממנו את ידיהם ורגליהם (כניסה לבית המקדש הייתה אחת הסיבות העיקריות לרחצה).
