An elderly woman dressed in a chemise, pinafore, and headscarf is sitting on a bench and rocking a cradle suspended on a sweep and covered with a bed curtain. She has a started fragment of pin knitting in her hands; a ball of thread is on the floor. Three knitting techniques were widespread in Pomorye in the late 19th and early 20th century: with one needle, with rod pins, and crocheting. The material for knitting was homemade wool.
