Photograph: Two peasant women in rich costumes
Arkhangelsk province, Arkhangelsk district
17,1 x 11,8
The women are wearing festive costumes of young married women: the right-hand one is dressed in a damask jerkin, a brocade pinafore, and neck jewelry; the left-hand one has on a silk dress with a lace collar and cuffs; on their heads are povoinik headdresses with “shanotski” kerchiefs over them tied with their ends forward. The kerchiefs’ ends were slightly raised above he forehead and clasped with brooches or pins making koostyshki (horns). The kerchief with koostyshki replaced the skolka, a special headgear of a young woman, repeating its fashion. A headscarf with ends back was tied over the kerchief with koostyshki. Abstract by O.G.
