On August 26, 1827 the Emperor Nicholas I signed the recruiting conscription decree establishing the military draft norms for the Jews, in particular for men of Karaite communities. In the autumn of 1827, Crimea’s Karaite communities sent their delegation to St. Petersburg to have the decree canceled as regards the Karaites; as a result of the trip, the decree was suspended. In 1833, it was decided that for exemption from the draft, the Karaites were granted the right to pay a money compensation of 2,000 silver rubles for each recruit, and local authorities in their turn were obliged not to conscript Karaites into the armed forces (we used materials from the article by D. A. Prokhorov).
