The photo shows Pomors at leisure. On a makeshift table are iron and porcelain cups with saucers, glass bottles and shot glasses; hanging above the table is a large copper crew kettle. During fishery, Murman crews formed a peculiar “production community consisting solely of men, disconnected from everyday family and rural life for a long time, from spring till autumn. Their own traditions, ways and customs were formed there, certain norms of common law were followed, and relationships with fishermen of other crews were built up. Abstract by O.G. Baranova
