“Types of Ethnic Groups of Turkestan Territory” . "Turkestan Album. By order of K. P. von Kaufmann the 1st, General Governor of Turkestan. Prepared by A. A. Kuhn". Bukharan Jews started trading in Kazalinsk from the day of its foundation in 1853 (before 1867 it was called Syr-Darya Fort No. 1). Active trade was favored by the advantageous situation of the town located at the cross of two caravan tracks from Bukhara and Khiva. The most enterprising merchants, Yakub Kolontarov (Kalendarev), David Yakubov, Boruch Djianov (Boruch ben, i.e. son of, Joshua), ran several shops each.
