Annotation:

Funerals and keeping the cemetery in order were the responsibilities of the Chevra kadisha funeral brotherhood. The body of the deceased was washed with water, immersed in the “mikvah" (ritual bath) and dressed in “tachrichim” (white fabric). The burial was to be completed as early as possible, ideally on the same day. Openings were made in the coffin so that the body could contact the earth.

גופה על אלונקה לפני קבורתו. מחוז פולטבה, עיר גדיאץ'. יהודים אירופאים. הצלם זארמבסקי א'.אי'. .צילום משלחתי. 1923 תמונה מודפסת. הלוויה ושמירה על הסדר בבית הקברות היו באחריות אחוות ההלוויות "חברה קדישא". גופו של המנוח נשטף במים, נטבל ב"מקווה" (גופן פולחני) ונעטף ב"תכריחין" (בד לבן). הקבורה היתה אמורה להתבצע מוקדם ככל האפשרי, באופן אידאלי באותו יום. בארון המתים נעשו חורים כך שהגוף יבוא במגע עם האדמה.
