Annotation:

In 1897, 11,689 Jews lived in Vinnitsa (over 36% of the entire population), and 31,035 Jews in the whole Vinnitsa District. In 1910, the city had 17 synagogues and other Jewish praying houses, 2 private Jewish female schools, and a Jewish two-grade male school. The artisan suburb of Vinnitsa, which from the late 18th century was mainly settled by Jews, was nicknamed “Jerusalemka.” Before the revolution, the Zavarkin family was one of the richest in Vinnitsa. Matvei Zavarkin (Moses Fligeltub before christening) opened the city’s first colonial grocery shop in 1900, and supplied tea, coffee, and chocolate to the Imperial Court.
