In the late 19th century, according to the 1897 census, 11.8 % of all Bessarabians were Jews, and only 30% of them fended for themselves. Among their most popular occupations, along with crafts, there was petty trading, including peddlery

מוכר בייגלים. בסרביה. יהודים אירופאים. צלם ד'.אי'. ירמקוב. שנות ה-1870-1880. בסוף המאה ה - 19, לפי רישום אוכלוסין לשנת 1897, יהודים היוו 11.8% מכלל אוכלוסיית בסרביה, שרק 30% מהם היו עצמאים. בין המקצועות הנפוצים ביותר, לצד מלאכת יד, היה סחר קטן, כולל רוכלות.
