Samarkand was considered as the main center of Jewish education, and boys from all of the Turkestan Land arrived there to study. The Bukharan Jews traditionally opened schools at synagogues, since the education was mostly of religious dimension. The schools were financially supported by wealthy members of the community. The schools were of two levels, cheder primary schools for boys of over five or six years old, and yeshivas for boys of ten or eleven, where Hebrew and mathematics were taught and the Talmud was studied. Most of the children had only primary education: in three to four years, boys got a general idea of Judaism and reading and writing basics, and learned prayers by heart.
