Annotation:

In 1843, the Jews of Samarkand, previously settled among the Moslems, were granted the right to buy a plot of land where a Jewish quarter with a special layout was formed, to become a city within the city of a kind. Later, it grew into the largest community of Bukharan Jews numbering over five thousand people in the early 20th century. Living compactly and isolated from the Moslems, the Bukharan Jews were enabled to observe without restriction their religious regulations and habits in everyday life.

"מח'לאי- יהודיון" זהו הרובע היהודי בסמרקנד. חבל-ארץ טורקיסטן, מחוז סמרקנד, עיר סמרקנד. יהודים בוכרים. תמונה ממשלחת אתנוגרפית ס. מ. דודין משנת 1901-1902. צלם ס. מ. דודין שנת 1902. בשנת 1843 יהודי סמרקנד, קיבלו היתר לקניית שטח אדמה, כאשר לפני כן התיישבו בקרב מוסלמים. בשטח הנרכש, נוסד הרובע היהודי בעל תכנון ייחודי, שהפך לעיר מיוחדת במינה בתוך עיר. בשלב מאוחר יותר, הרובע הפך לקהילה הגדולה ביותר בקרב היהודים הבוכרים, שמנתה יותר מ 5000 איש בתחילת המאה ה-20. התגוררות קומפקטית ומבודדת ממוסלמים איפשרה ליהודים בוכרים להקפיד על מנהגי היהדות בחיי היומיום ללא הפרעה.
