After the first church was built in Markovo in 1862, the village became the center of the Anadyr Orthodox parish. The active missionary work of Priest Mitrofan Shipitsyn promoted the strengthening of the Orthodox faith in the region. The indigenous population participated in ecclesiastical ordinances – baptism, marriage etc. On the Savior day (Vernicle Image of the Savior), a religious procession to the Anadyr River was held there.
