Annotation:

Jewish ethnographic expedition of S. A. An-sky. Shamash or shamesh (Yiddish) was a synagogue caretaker. Expedition member Yu. Engel remembers that Ruzhyn was the first shtetl visited by the expedition in 1912: “We had it hard in Ruzhyn. All the time there were oceans of mud in the streets, like I’d never seen before. The inn was also unfriendly, without any conveniences whatsoever.”

"שמש", "שמס" (יידיש) - איש מזבח בבית כנסת. על פי זיכרונותיו של חבר המשלחת יו'. אנגל, יירת רוז'ין היה המקום הראשון אליו יצאה המשלחת ב-1912: "ברוז'ין נתקלנו בקשיים. כל הרחובות כל הזמן היו בוץ שמעולם לא ראיתי בחיי. הדיור גם לא היה נחמד, ללא שום תנאים".
