It served the shaman as a means of transportation through the Worlds of the Universe during the ritual. Two crosses on the tambourine are symbols of the four cardinal points, elongated chains - signs of a barrier and a transition between the common and the sacred worlds. The iron hoops inside the tambourine symbolize the "gathering place" of the spirits - the assistants to a shaman.
