It was part of a complex headdress, serving as an undercap over which a scarf was draped or folded. It was worn by Uzbek and Tajik women, but by the early 20th century, it had fallen out of fashion in cities and was retained primarily as a headdress by Bukharan Jewish women and the Lyuli Roma of Central Asia.
