The Fergana Valley, a crucial section of the Great Silk Road, was quite clearly influenced by China. This was one of the distinctive features of Fergana compared to other cultural areas of Central Asia. The collector S.M. Dudin captured this curious cultural feature of the Fergana oasis by including in his collection a women's robe made of Chinese satin with exquisite satin embroidery. The main motif of this robe's embroidery is butterflies, which in China are a symbol of marital love and longevity. In Islam, the image of a butterfly is part of the image of paradise.
