Kanavat veils were decorated with a strip of braid or metallic lace down the center of one side, thus indicating the veil's position on the head. Brightly colored kanavats were long considered a fashionable accessory; over time, the veils were cut into two or three pieces, called "half-fatties," and used as festive headscarves.
