Annotation:

Rabbi is a title conferred after completion of Jewish higher religious education at the yeshiva, and licensing to head a community and to be a member of a rabbinic court. The man has a talith (praying shawl) on his shoulders, with tefillins (little boxes with scrolls from the Torah) tied to his forehead and forearm.

רב. מחוז מוגילב. יהודים אירופאים. צלם קוסטקו ו'.ק'. 1903-1904. תמונה מודפסת. רב - זהו תואר אשר ניתן לאחר קבלת השכלה גבוהה דתית היהודית ב"ישיבה", ומעניק את הזכות לעמוד בראש הקהילה ולהיות חבר בית הדין הרבני. על כתפיו של האיש לבוש טלית (כיסוי תפילה), ועל מצחו וזרועו קשורים תפילינים (קופסאות עם קטעי התורה). קוסטקו ויאצ'סלב קליסטרטוביץ' (? - 1881), סטודנט של אוניברסיטת סנקט-פטרבורג - בשנות 1904-1907 עבד כצלם במחלקת האתנוגרפיה.
