Yamal-Nenets National District
Mid 20th century
Fur: natural: hide (reindeer); bone; cloth: cloth; animal derived materials
Every woman and girl had a handbag for needlework. She kept in it needles, tendon threads, thimbles, and pieces of cloth and fur. Such handbags were made of deer forehead skin. The handbag was decorated with fur patchwork, suede fringe, and hooves of newborn calves. The handbag’s mouth made of deer skin suede was painted with red lead. Sometimes, a needle cushion was sewn on to the handbag. Abstract by I.A. Karapetova
