The clapper of an elongated whalebone with a small wooden handle was an important appliance in whaling. Having found one or several whales, the hunters started hitting the water with the clapper. The sound so produced, resembling the sound of approaching catfish, main sea predators, created a panic among whales, and they became easy prey for sea hunters. Abstract by V.V. Gorbacheva
